Laufgrønstr (Old Norse Rune)

$1.95

The ferocity and fire channeled in “Laufgrønstr” will bring out every singer’s inner viking. The primal drum, compound meter, hand claps, extended vocal techniques, and colossal divisi conjure a scene from another time. A time of dragons, viking ships, crackling hearths, and legends. For advanced treble voices, “Laufgrønstr” will thrill audiences. “Heyi!!!”

TRANSLATION:

Wealth is a source of discord among kinsmen;
the wolf lives in the forest

Man is an augmentation of the dust;
great is the claw of the hawk.

Yew is the greenest of trees in winter;
it is wont to crackle when it burns

Birch has the greenest leaves of any shrub;
Loki was fortunate in his deceit.

Plenty is a boon to men;
I say that Frothi was generous.

Sun is the light of the world;
I bow to the divine decree.

Giant causes anguish to women;
misfortune makes few men cheerful.

The opening calls are meant to imitate kulning, also known as the Nordic herding call, an ancient practice to call livestock
and communicate between farms across the fjords. They should be sung with much freedom and abandon, ideally by
soloists calling across the choir from one another. All singers should strive for non-vibrato with a bright and forward tone.
A challenging, yet satisfying powerful and rhythmic piece for your outstanding treble choir!

A full IPA pronunciation guide is included in the score.
