A Future of Light (Canticle of Mary)
$2.75
This Advent piece is a re-imagined Magnificat for the modern world, portraying Mary as a warrior who sings for the voiceless and stands up for justice. It also weaves in the familiar “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” blending the medieval and the modern together into one. Lush harmonies and meaningful words come together to evoke the season of Advent.
A Future of Light (Canticle of Mary) was originally written for the Worthington Chamber Singers under the direction of Eric Parrish and sets the text of a local Worthington, MN poet, Erin Makela.
Poet/Lyricist: Erin Makela and Isaiah 45:8
Available Voicings: SATB a cappella and mezzo-soprano solo

I am a woman,
favored and chosen,
disgraced no more but lifted high. Generations shall
call me blessed that I did not bow to the fear of those
who would see me fall.
Generations shall call me blessed for I sing defiantly
for she the ignored,
for she the abused,
for she the world names worthless.
I sing for the generations of women blessed.
You are favored.
Defiantly sing through tears and fears, doubts and
brokenness
for a future of light.
